Mangaluru, August 8: In the coastal belts, many methods were employed in the past to reduce sea erosion, but none could act as a remedy for this although a lot of funds were spent on it.

Every year, the residents staying closer to the sea shore in Dakshina Kannada district suffer a lot due to the losses incurred by the erosion caused by the high waves rising in the sea.

On a pivotal basis, tetrapods are being used to stop sea erosion at Tannirbavi beach.

Many countries including USA, Japan and South America have tasted success out of tetrapod experiment. In Mumbai too, this method has successfully blocked advancement of sea.

Presently, the task of piling tetrapods, which are made by using cement and granite, at Tannirbavi beach has been going on. Each of these tetrapods cost nearly Rs 10,000 and the seashore in the city will needs lacs of such tetrapods, he says.

Publics opine that Tannirbavi has never experienced sea erosion. The tetrapods should have been used in Ullal and Someshwar beaches, which are highly effected by the waves.

Against sea erosion, the state government has taken up construction of permanent protective walls at a cost of Rs 236 crore under Asian Development Bank scheme.
