Calls speed-breakers unscientific, orders replacement; Contractor did a shoddy job, says official
If you thought the fibre road humps in the city are a waste of public money and caused more trouble, you have Deputy Commissioner N. Prakash on your side. He said at a meeting on Monday that the humps are unscientific and ordered their replacement with the one that are safe for motorists.
Participating in the road safety meeting on Monday, Mr. Prakash said the fibre road humps have been causing a lot of problems to motorists.
“If you are proceeding towards the Police Commissioner’s office, you will h it a hump just ahead of the gate. You will have to slow down to avoid jerks. It’s unscientific and unsafe for motorists. I don’t know the purpose behind laying such speed-breaker,” he said.
Such humps were laid near two places on M.G. Road – near City Corporation and Empire Mall and near Town Hall and near Police Commissioner’s office. Though the one at Empire Mall has fully disintegrated the nails have remained. The humps at City Corporation and Town Hall have partially come off.
Assistant Executive Engineer Krishna Bhat said a Bangalore-based firm had been entrusted the task of laying the fibre road humps.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic) G.V. Subramanya said though the fibre road humps conform to specifications laid down by the Indian Road Congress, the firm did a shoddy work of laying it and hence it got disintegrated in a quick time, he said.
Canara Bus Operators Association President Rajavarma Ballal suggested broader road humps similar to those laid in Bangalore. Mr. Prakash asked Mr. Bhat to submit a feasibility report in this regard.
‘NO HORN’ ZONE
Mr. Prakash agreed to a proposal to declare Jyothi Circle, the road along Wenlock Hospital and Lady Goschen Hospital as ‘no horn’ zones. Mangalore City Corporation Joint Commissioner Srikant Rao said 181 places in the city have been identified through survey to set up autorickshaw parks.
Regional Transport Officer C. Mallikarjuna pointed out there was demand for skywalks at the Besant College Circle and also at the SBI Circle in Hampankatta.
SKYWALK UNUSED
Hasanabba, a participant, said skywalk constructed by the National Highway Authority of India in Adyar has not been in use. Superintendent of Police Abhishek Goyal said skywalks could be effective only if railings are placed on the median. An activist raised objections to goods autorickshaws carrying iron roads and other consignments endangering the lives of motorists.
The meeting heard that Hindustan Petroleum was yet to provide Accident Relief Vehicle to reach places where LPG tankers may overturn.
