Government to acquire 276.82 acres of land to raise height of Thumbe dam

Mangaluru, July 14: With a view to provide continuous drinking water facility to the city, the Mangalore City Corporation has moved forward to take measures, and orders have been passed by the Deputy Commissioner to the concerned authorities to acquire 276.82 acres of land to raise the height of Thumbe dam from the present four metres to seven metres.

DC A B Ibrahim passed this order chairing the progress review meeting on development works within the city corporation limits held here on Monday July 13th.

The work on the new vented dam had been handed over to Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Sewerage Board. A sum of Rs 21.97 crore has already been paid to the board. He said that in tune with the dam site and after making changes in the design and estimate,  a revised estimation of Rs 75.50 crore has been prepared for the dam, informed In-charge commissioner of the city corporation, Gokuldas Nayak.

He informed that leakage and overflowing of underground drainage line is observed in old municipal areas as these pipes and pits are unable to bear pressure due to the increase in density of population. Hence there is a need for the renovation underground drainage line in old municipal areas. A proposal to include overall renovation of the underground drainage network in the old municipal area in the second phase of Asian Development Bank project is placed before the government. A survey and study on this proposal has been handed over by the government to GKW Consultants Kolkata. The proposed survey also includes about 100 km of pipeline which had been left out during the execution of Rs 218 crore project of KUDCEMP in the past, informed Gokuldas Nayak.

In the Chief minister’s Rs 100 crore grant, 110 project works have been taken in the second phase and 82 projects are completed. Nine project works of Rs 1857 lakhs are under progress. Tender process are on for fifteen project works of Rs 4,425. In the third phase of the same project, a total of 168 works have been undertaken at a cost of Rs 100 crores, out of which 44 works of Rs 2,260.10 lakhs are in progress. Tender process are on for 56 works, said Gokuldas Nayak.

Mayor Jacinta Vijay Alfred, deputy mayor-Purushotham Chitrapur, ADC- Sadashiva Prabhu, executive engineer of Karnataka Water Supply and Sewerage Board- Nataraj, and president MCC standing committee members were present.
