Gang of areca nut thieves arrested – Rs 1.45 lakhs arecanut, Ikon car seized.

Bantwal, June 25: Mangaluru CCB and Bantwal town police have cracked a case of arecanut theft and arrested five thieves from Baddakatte in Bantwal.

The arrested are identified as Vijay (35) from Kulai in Mangaluru, Muhammed Shaffi (35) from Katipalla, Suratkal, Habib Hassan (28), resident of Permannur, Muhammed Azharuddin (27) from Neermarga and  Muhammed Nawaz (24).

The accused already face two cases of theft in Bantwal town station, three cases in rural station here, and one in Vittal police station.

During investigations, the gang members confessed that they were the ones who stole eight gunny bags of areca nut weighing 65 kg each from the areca nut shop of Kamalaksha Shenoy at Baddakatte on the night of May 14th this year.

The gang posing as tourists, used to travel in a Maruti car during late evening, and utilize the chance when they get opportunity to steal. The gang carried their theft operation around Bantwal taluk, Panambur, Mangaluru, Beltangady, Vittal, and Udupi, said the police.

The police have confiscated huge stock of areca nut worth 1.45 lakhs, and an Ikon car from the possession of the accused.

This arrest operation was led by Bantwal police circle inspector, K U Belliappa, SI Nandakumar, ASI Sanjeeva and other personnel’s.
