Jacintha Alfred elected as the new Mayor of Mangalore City Corporation, Purushottam as Deputy Mayor.

Mangaluru, March 12: Finally the result of the much awaited election result for the post of Mayor of Mangalore City Corporation has emerged today. Jacintha Viajy Alfred (Falnir 39 ward), from congress has been elected as the new mayor of Mangalore.

Purushottam Chitrapura has been chosen as the Deputy Mayor.

During the second term election held for the post of Mayor and Deputy Mayor on Thursday, competition took place between Roopa Bangera from BJP and Jacintha Vijay Alfred. The MCC members elected their representatives by lifting their hands to vote in the election. Finally Jacintha Vijay Alfred emerged as the Mayor by winning more votes.

This time, the government had ordered to reserve Mayor post for the general category women and Deputy Mayor position for general category.

Mysuru provincial divisional officer SS Pattanna Shetty who had participated as the electoral officer, conducted the elections.

Mangalore City Corporation Commissioner Hephsiba Rani Korlapati and Additional Commissioner Gayathri were present.

All the 60 members of the council voted. MLA’s J R Lobo and Mohiuddin Bava and MLC Ivan D’Souza also voted.

Twenty BJP members in the council voted for Roopa Bangera, while 38 Congress party members, including MLAs Mohiuddin Bava and J R Lobo and MLC Ivan D’Souza voted for of Jacintha Vijay Alfred. Five council members were neutral.

K Rajesh from BJP and Purushottam Chitrapur from Congress had filed nominations for the post of deputy mayor. Twenty BJP corporators voted for Rajesh and 37 Congress members including MLA J R Lobo and MLC Ivan D’Souza voted for Purushottam Chitrapur.

Jacintha was declared as the mayor of Mangaluru city and Purushottam the deputy mayor whose term of office is till March 12th, 2016.

After the mayoral poll, election was also held for the statutory committees of the MCC.

Raghuveer, A C Vinayraj, Hemalatha R Salian, Harinath, Rajendra, Akhila Alva and Ashok Shetty, filed nominations for the tax and finance committee and all the seven were elected unopposed.

Gunashekar, Poornima, Rathikala, Prakash D Salian, Nagaveni, Pratibha Kulai and Rajanish were elected for public health, education and social law committee.

Tilak Raj, Shailaja, Appi, Latha Salian, Diwakar, Deepak K Poojary, and Basheer Ahmed were elected for city project and development committee.

Meera Karkera, Jayanthi Achar, Asha D’Silva, Sumayya, B Prakash, Vijaykumar and Keshav were elected for accounts committee.

Jacintha Vijay Alfred addressing the media after the mayoral election on Thursday March 12th, thanked Ramanath Rai, Mahabala Maarla, J R Lobo, Mohiuddin Bava and Ivan D’Souza for their support and also thanked the members of MCC for choosing her as the Mayor of Mangaluru.

On this occasion, she also remembered late Blasius D’Souza and expressed her gratefulness to him for his support.

Regarding her plans for the city, she said, as mayor, she would give importance to provide clean drinking water, rectify drainage system related issues, emphasize on women’s empowerment and regarding the rules related to housing in the city. She said she would protect the rights of the citizens, listen to their concerns, respond to the people, treat all equally and discharge her duties, she said.

Purushottam Chitrapur thanked all the council members and the elected representatives and said, we will continue the good work initiated by Mahabala Maarla during his tenure as mayor and serve our best. He expressed that he would support the mayor for the overall development of the corporation.

Former mayor Mahabala Maarla congratulated the new mayor and the deputy mayor and said, during the past one year, many development works were brought about in Mangaluru. He thanked the MLA’s, MLC’s and corporators for their support.
