Bantwal, February 13: The leg of a girl student was severely injured after the wheels of a private bus came over it. The accident occurred at Vittal bus stand on Thursday February 12th.
The deceased is Vidyashree, daughter of Nagappa Gowda from Kantadka in Alike in the taluk.
Vidyashree, a second BCom student of the first grade college in Vittal was walking inside the private bus stand to board a bus to her college in the morning. According to the eyewitnesses, a private bus, which has hurried to get into the private bus stand, hit the girl student. As a result Vidyashree fell to the ground. Immediately the wheels of the bus moved over her legs, injuring her badly.
Vidyashree, was rushed to a private hospital in Mangaluru for treatment.
Over 200 students of the first grade college of Vittal moved out of their college and protested as a poor student was badly hurt due to the recklessness of a bus driver. They blocked private buses, came in a procession to the bus stand, and also held a protest demonstration at Vittal Junction.
The college students, Samshuddin and Deeksha, who addressed the gathering, expressed their rage over the negligence of private buses, and demanded that the entire treatment expenditure of the poor student be met by the owner of the errant bus. They also wanted the concerned to pay compensation to the parents of the girl.
The students said that a newly erected circle within the private bus stand led to several accidents in which students were injured sometime ago. They urged to remove the new circle, and erect a new circle at the spot where the old circle was stationed.
The owners of some private buses approached the students and spoke to them, but they were not successful in convincing them to withdraw their protest.
The students protested for some time, and dispersed, as the public’s will suffer unnecessarily if the protest is continued. The students warned that protest will be continued on Friday if their demands are not responded properly.
