Mental harassment with derogatory remarks by upper caste subordinates; Police reluctant to act, says headmistress

Mangalore, May 26: It has been reported that Kamalakshi, headmistress of Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat Higher primary school in Pajeer,of Pamelabarike village about 30 kms away from city, belong to scheduled caste have complained that she has been harassed by an upper caste subordinate by making derogatory remarks against her caste.

 But according to her statement, police is reluctant to act on a complained by her against subordinate teacher Ramakrishna under the provision of scheduled caste and scheduled tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

“Being a member of a dalit community I have been tortured mentally by my colleague Ramakrishna, who belong to upper caste. He used to make derogatory remarks using my caste name in the school, even though I am the headmistress. I have filed a complaint at Konaje police station on February 22, but they are trying to submit B report on my complaint citing the reason of lack of evidence. School Development and Monitoring Committee president Chandrahas Shetty is a witness in my complaint. Hence, charge sheet should be filed against the teacher after taking the statements of Chandrahas Shetty,” Kamalakshi said adding that she has made the request to city police commissioner Manish Kharbikar.

Kharbikar said that the case will be reviewed by taking the statements of SDMC president.
