UDUPI: In a bid to save electricity in city municipal council (CMC) limits, Udupi CMC has taken up a green initiative to replace street lights with LED (light-emitting diodes) bulbs.

Already 360 such bulbs have been replaced and there are about 13,181 streetlights in the city where this initiative will be extended gradually.

In the first phase, 40 streetlights on K M Marg Road, 200 streetlights on Kinnimulki-Taluk Office Road and 120 streetlights in Karavali-Kadiyali stretch have been replaced with LED bulbs at a cost of Rs 7 lakh. Out of 13,181 streetlights in the city limits, 10,784 are tube lights, 1,759 are sodium vapour bulbs, 210 are T-5 lights, 352 are metal hard lights. Of these, sodium vapour bulbs tend to consume more energy.

As per the estimate of energy experts, if LED bulbs consume 635 units of electricity per day, sodium vapour bulbs consume 450 units per hour. Hence replacement of all the streetlights with LED bulbs is bound to save energy.

CMC commissioner Gokuldas Nayak told STOI that the project was taken up under energy efficiency initiative. If all the streetlights were to be replaced with LED bulbs, it would cost the CMC Rs 78 crore, he said and added that as per the current scenario, the CMC was aiming to carry out the work in a few selected areas at a projected cost of Rs 3.24 crore. If the civic body receives additional funds from the government, the project may be carried out extensively, he said.

Shashidhar Hegde, CMC engineer, said that this project was taken up on build-operate-transfer basis. The agency which has taken the responsibility of executing this project is vested with the maintenance of the LEDs for up to three years, he added.
