Mangalore/Kolkata, May 09: Ready to host his new cookery show based on the fusion of Bengali and Punjabi cuisine on a lifestyle channel, celebrity chef Harpal Singh Sokhi said the gourmet can’t be confined within one region.
“Nothing can be truer. Just like you can see fusion in our films, with songs and other highlights of Punjabi culture merging with Bengali influences in our Hindi films more and more these days,” popular actor Srilekha Mitra commented as the TV cookery show anchor .
Sokhi, whose ‘food food’ show grabbed eyeballs in a national lifestyle channel for the varied cuisine on its platter, said he would love to show the world how the fabled egg roll can effortlessly seam with the very Harinavi ‘Tawa Machhli Masaledar’ in that show.
Australian footballer Tolgay, gushing over the typical Bengali Chicken Curry said the Punjabi Kadai Murgh Palak Methi also remained his favourites and the two have some similarities.
“Various provinces of India, the different regions offer such a varied platter but there remain similarities in their very Indianness. I would love to introduce some of our own delicacies to this part of the world, having turned into my second home later,” Tolgay, who was present at the fusion food launch initiative by Sokhi said.
Pointing towards the wall motifs of trams, hand-pulled rickshaws and red-brick paintings, stained glass windows so typical of ‘banedi households’ of Kolkata in TFT – the first ever Bengali-Punjabi initiative by Sokhi – celebrated fashion designer Abhisek Dutta said, “Wish I could turn the place into a ramp.”
“Definitely would hold a fashion show mirroring the varied food items, indigenous state delicacies, from sarsho ki saag to shukto, in future,” Dutta said.
“Bengal has so much creativity to offer. Such a type of show will be unprecedented and unique if we do it in an aesthetic way with glam pour quotient.”
