Cameras and smart technologies will soon put road violators under tight spot in Dubai as Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced extended use of smart technology to monitor traffic movement in the emirate.
As of now, there are 356 cameras deployed at main junctions and roads to monitor the traffic movement across Dubai.
The new surveillance plan include more mobile cameras which will send instant images to control centres about the current traffic condition of roads, according to RTA officials.
“These cameras are integrated with an array of modern technologies such as telecommunication systems, solar power panels, and movement remote sensors,” said Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA.
Al Tayer also unveiled a plan for constructing a brand new traffic control centre at Al Barsha on Saturday.
Speaking at an inspection tour of the Deira Traffic Systems Control Centre, Al Tayer said that the centre would streamline control of various intelligent traffic systems including state-of-the-art virtual messaging signs.
These signs cover Shaikh Zayed Road, Emirates Road, Shaikh Rashid Road, Abu Baker Al Siddique Road, Ittihad Road, Al Mina Road, and Baniyas Road in addition to Al Maktoum and Al Garhoud Bridges, and Al Shandagha and Airport Tunnels.
The system calculates the volume of traffic congestion on main roads and highways, detects abnormal traffic patterns and reveals the congestion generated by high traffic volumes.
The system also computes the trip times on these roads after analysing the inputs captured by onsite devices such as sensors, mobile traffic surveillance cameras, and photo analysis cameras, which automatically figure out any abnormality in traffic patterns.
The system also includes lanes control signs installed all over main roads alerting motorists about the road condition well in advance, particularly at turns, highways, and sudden congestion by directing them to alternative routes.
The Deira Traffic Systems Control Centre, which operates around-the-clock, comprises a giant screen linked to 356 cameras deployed at main junctions and roads to monitor the traffic movement across Dubai. The traffic signals control system- known as Scoot (Split Cycle Offset Optimisation Technique) is one where 455 signalised junctions are linked with the Central Traffic Signals Control System.
