The body of T. Karthikeyan (32) who had gone to Bahrain for contract fishing and was shot dead by the Qatar coast guard on September 21 while fishing on the high seas, was brought back here on Saturday, thanks to the arrangements made by the Central and State governments.
A pall of gloom descended on the hamlet as the grieving wife and relatives wept over the coffin containing the body of Karthikeyan, flown from Qatar to Tiruchi and brought to the village by road.
Karthikeyan went to Bahrain in June to work under an ‘Arabi’ on contract from June to March. He was fishing with three others on September 21, when the Qatar coast guard fired at them for illegally entering into Qatar waters.
Karthikeyan died, while the other three escaped unhurt. Minister for Fisheries K.A. Jayapal presented a cheque for Rs. 5 lakh as solatium to the victim’s wife.
