Mumbai: Let’s keep it as straight as calling a spade a spade – Sanjay Leela Bhansali requires yet another masterpiece to reinstate himself in the world of films. His last two directorial ventures, bland Saawariya and OTT Guzaarish, had to swallow bitter pills at the box-office.
He is the same maverick maker who delivered ingenious gems like Khamoshi, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Black and Devdas.
But SLB’s brilliant outings were soon followed up with some disastrous designs. If he has taken pleasure in a winning spree, Sanjay evidently fell short of wooing his viewers with his next few flicks. The desperation to gather gold at the ticket-windows witnessed its peak when he even settled to produce an out-an-out masala potboiler, Rowdy Rathore. Here again, all we were missing was a sharp Bhansali touch.
To fight the serious case of praises turning into pannings, SLB planned his next that had it all to guarantee packed cinema halls. Surely, he was thinking of cooking up a delicious dish this time around. That would pack an invincible punch with flavour, spirit, colours, spices, and of course, to be served piping-hot.
Ram-Leela promos have already created huge waves. And the filmmaker is certain the film will be the game-changer for him, post its release.

RE-INVENTING BHANSALI-NESS
Sanjay’s earlier movie-outings have all spelled grandeur, delicate portrayals of leading ladies, soothing soundtrack and single or minimal colour palettes. But Ram-Leela flaunts an all-new attitude – something we haven’t lived through previously. Except for its splendid sets, the romantic drama has nothing in common with SLB’s signature props. The film is super high on energy, boasts of raw, unrefined, passionate lyrics, and loads of colours. A tasteful, welcoming twist to Bhansali-ism, we say.
THE SPOT-ON LEAD COUPLE
Ranveer and Deepika’s alleged closeness has been the toast of the town for months now. Clearly, Sanjay Leela Bhansali did a bang-on job by getting the two ‘sweethearts’ together. The super crackling chemistry shared by the two stunners is surely the film’s biggest USP.
SOFT ROMANCE TURNS BOLD
Take any Bhansali film and you’ll realise soft, subtle love stories are an integral part of his scripts. Ram-Leela is no excetion. Only it is laden with a gritty, gutsy romance. Also, Sanjay’s previous projects had intensity aplenty, but certainly not physical intimacy. Ram-Leela boasts of the fiercest couple Sanjay has invited on board yet. The two indulge in lip-locks and passionate sequences. It is also said that the film has some smoking-hot scenes between its lead pair.
SLB’S FIRST ITEM NUMBER
Melodious music has always been crucial to Bhansali’s ventures. He has given many foot-tapping, vibrant scores. Remember Nimbooda Nimbooda, Maar Daala, Dhol Baaje, Dola Re? Though the filmmaker has always maintained a distance from the item number rage, looks like he too wants to cash in on the craze now. Result – Priyanka Chopra has been hired to bring more spice and sizzle to the big screens. Her first look, in a teasing blouse and a flirtatious lungi-style skirt, has taken the cine-buffs by storm.
In a nutshell, SLB has employed all things hot and in vogue, to treat his viewers and critics with a wholesome meal, hoping that his novel, groundbreaking approach will win him claps and whistles from the media and the masses.
Ram-Leela hits theatres on 15th November.
