Uppinangady, September 15: Numerous people gathered at Uppinangady to participate in the protest against the Yettinahole Project. The protesters blocked the Mangaluru-Bengaluru highway completely demanding to drop the project.
A protest march was taken from Aaditya hotel in the morning today which moved through the National Highway and a protest was staged blocking the National Highway passing behind the Government Model Higher Primary School in Uppinangady. In addition, vehicles were parked blocking the roads which connect the highway to the town.
Wide support was witnessed for bundh. Several organizations, public associations, political parties, students associations jointly participated in this protest. Over five thousand people participated in this protest.
In this massive and peaceful protest, Swamijis from various mutts, MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, Tulu Cinema Actors- Actresses, leaders of several organizations, activists, and workers of various associations participated in large numbers.
Addressing the protesters, Dr Niranjan Rai- president of Netravati river diversion opposition struggle association said, this Yettinahole project which is a threat to the Karavali should not be implemented at any cost. We will not tolerate destruction of Karavali by implementing this project. The government must immediately drop this project. Our fight for the cause of saving Karavali is the beginning, not the end. It the government does not respond properly to protect River Netravati and the Western Ghats, severe protest will be staged in future, he said.
Protestors blocking the roads arrested:
Meanwhile, the police arrested the protesters who staged peaceful protest demanding to drop the Yettinahole project. This raged the protesters which went forward for ‘Jail Bharo’.
Heavy police security was deployed in the spot and as many as 300 police staffs were stationed at the place.
Parking System:
Parking arrangements were done by the organizers for vehicles at three places in Uppinanagady for the people arriving to participate in the protest.
