Man charged by district jail inmates in Mangalore.

Mangalore, October 15: It is alleged that the inmates of the district jail here have attacked a person who was arrested on the charges of demanding dowry just before his wedding. The victim is Mohammed Ilyas (24) from Pavoor.

It is said that some inmates of the district jail who had learnt about a person accused of cheating a woman had been brought to the same jail. They entered room number 3 of A block and allegedly attacked Mohammed Ilyas, banging him on his nose with a jug placed in the room.

Mohammed was arrested on October 12th, Sunday on his wedding day for demanding dowry from the woman he was about to marry.

It is gathered that, he had already taken Rs 2.5 lakhs in advance for wedding expenses.

It is learnt that, on the day of wedding, he demanded 70 sovereign gold and Rs 5 lakhs in cash to continue with the relationship. He had threatened to cancel the wedding if his demands were not met. Ilyas had admitted his offence.

Post the arrest, he was kept under judicial custody.
