Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Congress Floor Leader in the Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge have opposed the proposed move by the BJP-led NDA government to abolish the Planning Commission.

Responding to presspersons’ questions after landing at the Bellary airport here on Monday, Mr. Siddaramaiah said the proposed move was not correct. He said: “The Planning Commission, with experts from almost all important sectors, has been playing a pivotal role in helping to prepare a roadmap for the country’s economic development, building upon resources, identifying the thrust areas and programmes for the welfare of the people, among other things. Similarly, State Planning Boards were established in States.”

Mr. Kharge, while addressing a public meeting as part of the party’s election campaign, also took exception to the proposed move.

According to him, the move was only to help the corporate sector and big industrial houses and ignore the interests of the poor.
