People living near the banks of the Krishna told to shift to safe places
With the water-level in the Alamatti dam nearing its full-reservoir level (FRL), officials of Krishna Bhagya Jala Nigam Ltd. (KBJNL) opened 16 of the 26 crest gates on Tuesday.
According to officials, the water-level in the dam would have reached the FRL of 519.6 metre in 24 hours if the gates had not been opened.
The inflow into the dam has increased following incessant rain in the catchment areas in the State and in the neighbouring Maharashtra.
The district administrations of Bagalkot and Bijapur have cautioned people living near the banks of the Krishna to shift to safe places.
Officials said inflow into the dam has been at the rate of over 1 lakh cusecs in the last few days.
On Tuesday, the inflow was at 1,14,500 cusecs while the outflow was at 1,10,000 cusecs. The reservoir had 106 tmcft of water against its full capacity of 123 tmcft.
Water was being discharged at 42,000 cusecs for power generation. The officials said more crest gates would be opened if the inflow increases.
Increased inflow

Villages along the banks of the Krishna in Surpur taluk of Yadgir district face the threat of floods following increased outflow from the Narayanpur dam on Tuesday.
KBJNL officials told The Hindu on Tuesday that due to increased inflow into the dam, the authorities had opened 20 crest gates and were releasing water at 98,000 cusecs into the river. The inflow was at 1.1 lakh cusecs.
The water-level in the dam was 491 m on Tuesday against the FRL of 492.25 m.
Deputy Commissioner Manoj Jain said Revenue Department officials had been instructed to sound an alert in the villages downstream and ask people to move to safe places.
Inflow into KRS

The inflow into the Krishnaraja Sagar (KRS) has decreased in the last 72 hours as rain in the catchment areas of the Cauvery in Kodagu district has abated. The rate of inflow into the reservoir was 29,520 cusecs at 6.30 p.m. on Saturday. However, it dropped to 19,333 cusecs at 6.30 a.m. and to 14,413 cusecs at 6.30 p.m. on Tuesday, Cauvery Neeravari Nigam Ltd. sources said. The rate of outflow from the reservoir was 7,970 cusecs during the same time.
The water-level in the reservoir as of 6.30 p.m. on Tuesday was 113.85 ft against FRL of 124.8 ft.
