Bangalore: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Wednesday said the Maharani New Type Model School in Mysore will not be closed down and the land adjacent to it would be allotted for the construction of a national memorial for Swami Vivekananda.

Replying to a call-attention notice by M C Nanaiah (JD-S) in the Legislative Council, Siddaramaiah said there was no question of closing down the school, one of the oldest in the region with a rich history. “Many people have a lot of attachment to the Kannada medium school. The decision not to close it down has been taken after taking the opinion of the public,” Siddaramaiah said.

Nanaiah said the 22 students studying in Classes 1 to 7 at NTM School could be transferred to the nearby government school and the land handed over to Ramakrishna Ashram to facilitate a memorial to mark the 150th birth anniversary celebrations of Swami Vivekananda.
The government has also decided to transfer 36,591 square feet of the school land to the Ashram.

The location is ideal for the memorial, he said. Nanaiah said the chief minister should not succumb to pressure from self-styled Kannada protagonists over the school issue.
