The West Division police on Thursday raided used motorcycle shops and seized 46 bikes which were kept for sale without valid documents.

The drive was held based on information that stolen bikes were being sold by bike dealers.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Jagadeesh G.A. said several teams were formed to inspect 66 shops in and around West Division limits. The teams checked as many as 686 motorcycles and seized the bikes that were concealed in godowns of the shops.

The raids were conducted in Vijay Nagar, Upparpet, Kamakshipalya, Magadi Road, Basaveshwara Nagar and City Market areas. “Show-cause notices have been issued to the dealers to produce the documents, failing which strict action would be initiated,” Mr.Jagadeesh said.

City Police Commissioner Raghavendra Auradkar had essed concern over the increase in the number of chain snatching and robbery incidents using stolen bikes. He had directed the jurisdictional police to conduct surprise checks on pre-used two-wheeler shops.

“Our intention is not to harass the dealers but to ensure that stolen bikes being sold do not cause law and order issues in the city,” Mr. Jagadeesh said.
