Debut films by Kannada theatre directors to be screened

A Kannada theatre personality, who last year debuted with an independent film, is now staging a film festival on the terrace of his house in Vijaynagar.

The festival will screen six films – all debut efforts of fellow Kannada theatre directors who have taken to filmmaking in recent years.

Srinath Vasishtha, a theatre director, who debuted with his film ‘Manthana’ which dealt with drug abuse, was disillusioned by the lack of encouragement after his film had a limited release.

“That was when I realized that we need to take small experimental films like these to the people. I put up a shelter on my terrace and turned it into a space where films can be screened,” he said. The space can seat a hundred people.

Mr. Srinath has formed a committee of theatre personalities to steer the project. He plans to screen films every second and fourth Saturday.

‘Gandhi Jayanthi’ directed by Ravindranath Sirivara was screened on Saturday while Mr. Vasishtha’s film ‘Manthana’ was screened on Sunday. ‘Kalavu’, a film directed by M. Ravi will be screened on April 19; ‘Hadu Hakki Hadu’, directed by Nagendra Shah, will be shown on April 20; V. Chala’s critically acclaimed ‘Chitramandiradalli’ will be shown on April 26 while Ajay Kumar’s ‘Belakinedege’ will be screened on April 27. All screenings are scheduled at 6:30 p.m. to be followed by a discussion with the film director. Call 9845185070 for details.
