Bangalore, April 21, 2013:
Among the unique campaign modes adopted by candidates during the Assembly polls, the one used by Roshan Baig, the Congress candidate for Shivajinagar Assembly Constituency on Sunday, perhaps, has the most colour.
Hundreds of party workers, including supporters, who had gathered at Mount Carmel College Circle were thrilled by the sight of the Kannada film actor Ramya, dressed in a pale pink saree, standing atop a jeep with Baig and close friends. As the campaign made its way into residential areas, hundreds left their homes and joined the procession to catch a glimpse of Ramya.
Youths crowded around the jeep, eager to shake her hand and get an autograph in the bargain.
It was soon clear that the actress’s presence overshadowed the candidate.
Fans throng rally
News that the actress would take part in the campaign had attracted a large contingent of women, including several from SR Nagar who arrived hours before campaign time.
“I came here at 3 pm after lunch,” said Bhagya.
“Party workers informed us that Ramya would be coming. So we went to see her. But I’m not sure who the candidate is.”
Ramya, also a member of Congress Election Campaign Committee, expressed the opinion the State is experiencing a Congress wave.
“I am confident that this time Congress party will come to power in the State,” she said.
“I am too young in the party, but if responsibilities are given to me, I will perform my best. In the coming days I will be a part of Siddaramiah and D K Shivakumar’s campaign team.”
Baig was accompanied by friends and family members. He expressed confidence that the Congress will gain a majority in the Assembly elections.
