As many as 26 trees were felled by the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) at Kittur Rani Chennamma Circle on the junction of 100 ft Ring Road here to make way for a flyover to be built at a cost of Rs. 35.8 crore.

The flyover will be 352 metres long and will have four lanes (bi-directional). With seven piers, the flyover will also have a vertical clearance of 4.5 metres from the road level. A senior BBMP official, on condition of anonymity, told The Hindu that the work on the flyover was taken up recently. The flyover at the busy junction will ease vehicular congestion. “Traffic analysis and study has shown that once the flyover is completed, the junction will see at least 68 per cent relief in congestion,” the official said.

Trees were cut down to create space for storm water drains. BBMP is constructing RCC box drains on either side of the road. The work can progress as per schedule if the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) shifts the sanitary pipeline that is in the drain. BBMP has paid Rs. 1.35 crore to BWSSB and Rs. 1.28 crore to Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (Bescom) to shift utility lines.

The official said that the BBMP would also acquire 2,688 square metre (sqm) of land for construction of the flyover.

The work is expected to be completed in 18 months.

It may be recalled that the former Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa had laid the foundation for the flyover in December 2009. The estimated project cost was Rs. 32.3 crore.
