Five killed in road accident near Hoskote

11 Five people were killed and 19 others were injured, some of them critically, when a Volvo bus on its way to Bangalore from Nellore went out of control and hit a median near Hoskote in the early hours of Monday.

The injured were being treated in different hospitals and the condition of three of them is stated to be critical, police said.

The accident happened near MV Hospital, about 40 km from Bangalore. The bus was mostly occupied by people working in Bangalore and returning to the city after the Sankranti holidays. There were 52 passengers in the Volvo bus owned by Rajesh Travels, a private transport company.

According to the bus driver, now undergoing treatment in a hospital, he lost control of the vehicle while trying to avoid running over a person who was being chased by a pack of dogs. The bus hit the road divider and fell sideways on the service road.

One of the dead, Vijay Kumar, was a software professional working with the Wipro in Nigeria. He had come to India on vacation and after spending Sankranti holidays in Nellore, his hometown, was on his way to Bangalore. His wife Padmaja, daughter Akshaya (4) and son Adi (2) are being treated for multiple injuries.

Another victim, Anusha (24), was a pregnant woman hailing from Nellore. Her husband Srikanth, who works in Bangalore, is also critically injured and is undergoing treatment. Others who died were Pradeep, Manas Kumar (6) and Prasad. Police said Prasad, from Nellore, was a software engineering working in a reputed firm in Bangalore.
