5The annual Republic Day Flower Show at the Lalbagh Botanical Garden here is going to be bigger and more elaborate this year.

Starting Friday, the 199th flower show at Lalbagh is expected to attract at least four lakh visitors.

During the flower show, an exhibition of photographs of historical moments in the Horticulture Department will be held to mark the golden jubilee of the department. “Over the years, there have been many changes to Lalbagh and some of these changes can be seen through photographs and paintings that will be displayed here,” said D.L. Maheshwar, Director of Horticulture.

Another highlight will be the demonstrations and workshops on rooftop gardening and terrace gardening aimed at promoting gardening in urban areas.

“This year, the flower show is estimated to cost over Rs. 1 crore. Considering that we are celebrating the golden jubilee of the Horticulture Department this year, instead of putting up structures like we did last year, we will be using flowers to depict the floriculture, olericulture (science of vegetable growing), fruit sciences and plantation crops of our State,” Mr. Gunawantha said.

The flower show will be open to public on Friday from 11.30 a.m.

The show will be on till January 26
