A mother of two who was alone at home on Saturday afternoon was found with her throat slit and with stab injuries on her stomach in Bagalagunte Cross near Peenya. The Peenya police said Bharati (48) had been living with her husband Gopal a postman, and her two children Aishwarya (14) and Gagan (12) in a two-storey building. While Bharati lived on the first floor, her sister Pushpa lived on the ground floor.

Mr. Gopal had taken Gagan along with him to a relative’s house near Amruthahalli while Aishwarya was downstairs with her aunt. The murder came to light when Ms. Pushpa asked her niece to go upstairs to call Bharati as they had to go shopping. However, instead of her sister coming downstairs, Ms. Pushpa found herself running up on hearing Aishwarya’s horrified screams. “We found her lying in a pool of blood in her room,” she said.

Neither the aunt nor the niece had observed any suspicious movements or noises, the police were told.

The police said though the jewellery on Bharati’s person was missing, they are not sure if it is a red herring.

They are looking for a former tenant who had paid an advance rent of Rs. 6,000 to Mr. Gopal but had moved out three days ago. Since then he had been demanding that the family return the money. However, the family said no one recalled seeing him at the time of the murder.
