BANGALORE, January 1, 2014: As the curtains fell on another year, Bangaloreans turned up in droves at a glitzy Brigade Road to welcome 2014. Around midnight, the Central Business District (CBD) of Bangalore — comprising Brigade Road, M G Road and Residency Road — was flooded with revellers.

Most of them were youngsters who started pouring into the CBD as soon as the sun set on 2013. Police personnel deployed in the area had a tough time controlling the crowd.

The visibly excited revellers were shooting pictures of their friends against the backdrop of the decked-up streets.

Earlier in the evening, 29-year-old techie Radika Sharma was elated about finally having a day to spend with her friends. On her way to a pub for the ‘New Year’s Eve Party’ with friends, she was looking forward to ushering 2014 with a bang. “I have always enjoyed the night life on New Year’s eve on Brigade Road for the last 10 years,” she said. She hoped that the coming year would be as good as the year that ended.

Kavya A, who recently moved to Bangalore from a quiet town in Andhra Pradesh, seemed a little baffled with the goings-on. Celebrating her first New Year in Bangalore, the 18-year-old said, “New Year in Bangalore is slightly over the top, but it is also exhilarating in a way.”

Having missed a flight to his hometown in Madhya Pradesh, 50-year-old Ahmed had come to Brigade Road for shopping, but decided to stay on through the night and watch the revelry.
