BANGALORE, December 9:  The row over diverting 8,000 sq. ft. of land belonging to the 1,000-year-old Vasantha Vallabaraya temple for the construction of a road in Vasanthpura near Konanakunte appears has been finally put to rest. The Revenue Department has struck down the proposal to hand over the land, which bounds the temple’s Kalyani (sacred pond), for the construction of a road.

In an order passed on December 5, the Special Deputy Commissioner (Bangalore South) instructed that the proposal to build a 40-foot road should be dropped immediately.

The proposed road was to provide access to an upcoming residential complex which was being built by a real estate developer.

The order the Deputy Commissioner said that the land on which the housing complex was being built has another access road to the south and did not need one more to connect it to the Vasanthpura Main Road.

The decision of the Religious Endowment Department (muzrai department) to hand over the land had triggered a controversy with members of the local population threatening to launch an agitation if the land was handed over.
