Volvo safety experts visit accident spot

Haveri, Nov 17, 2013, DHNS: A five-member team of international safety experts from the Volvo Bus Corporation on Sunday inspected the spot where one of its luxury buses caught fire, claiming seven lives, near here on National Highway – 4 on Thursday last.

The team, comprising Frede Overby, Volvo’s accident research manager from Sweden and representatives the company’s units in Chennai and Karnataka, gathered technical details to ascertain how the accident occurred and the bus caught fire. Through various methods and analyses, they were examining if the bus caught fire after its tyre burst due to the impact after hitting a parapet.

They took photographs of the remains of the bus and examined its engine, wheels, battery and a few drops of oil left in the engine. Some of the spare parts which were strewn all around the spot, were collected and examined by the team.

Investigation reports

The experts’ team will also study investigation reports by the local police and will submit a detailed report to the company, said sources. John Holman of Sweden, who works for the company in Bangalore, and Ramamurthy, its Bangalore unit chief, accompanied the team. District Superintendent of Police Jagamayyannavar, Shiggaon DySP B D Doddamani and Hosamani of CPI were also present during the inspection.
