BANGALORE: Gujarat strong man Narendra Modi is expected to campaign in five districts in Karnataka for the May 5 polls.

Confirming this, chief minister Jagadish Shettar without elaborating said on Saturday the party will utilize Modi’s services, and he will campaign in five of 30 districts in the state. He told reporters after participating in the party’s Foundation Day celebrations.

Modi had canvassed for the BJP in Karnataka during the assembly polls in 2008, and Lok Sabha polls in 2009. The party cadre and leaders are in an upbeat mood to welcome Modi, following his new status in national politics.

Modi had skipped the BJP’s central election committee meeting on Friday that finalized 140 candidates. Shettar said the party would release its second list of candidates either on April 9 or 10. Asked whether the party would give tickets to three MLAs – Katta Subramanya Naidu, Es En Krissnaiah Setty and Y Sampangi, who had been imprisoned in connection with corruption cases — the chief minister said the party is scrutinizing their credentials.
