BANGALORE, November 15:  “Children are the asset of a nation. They should be nurtured and their rights should be ensured,” said Umashree, Minister for Women and Child Development, while speaking at the Children’s Day celebrations organised on Thursday by the Department of Women and Child Development, Department of Public Instruction, State Bal Bhavan Society and the Karnataka State Council for Child Welfare.

Vulnerable

She pointed out that even today children are vulnerable to regressive practices such as female infanticide and child marriage.

“Many child marriages continue to take place in rural regions. We have introduced many schemes for the girl child. Parents of girl children must remember that bringing up a healthy girl child will help build a healthy nation,” she added.

Children as well as staff of anganwadis and government departments, and social workers were honoured with various State awards. A ‘Children’s Day Commemorative Stamps Album’ was released on the occasion.

Private organisations and schools had also organised various events to mark Children’s Day.

Free Camp

A free blindness prevention camp was organised at the Government Higher Primary School in Peenya for students and their families by Carl Zeiss India, which work in the fields of optics and optoelectronics, along with Nethradhama Super-specialty Eye Hospital and Rotary Bangalore South Parade.

Skit performed

At Orchids International School, teachers performed a skit on child labour. They had also organised other activities such as singing, dancing, painting, drawing, story-telling and fancy dress competition for students.
