Bangalore, Nov 4, 2013, DHNS: A retail paint shop was gutted and material worth Rs 90 lakh was damaged on 80 Feet Road in Basaveshwara Nagar on Monday morning.

Mansukh Lal Jain, owner of the shop, said he had conducted the Lakshmi puja in the shop on Sunday evening and went home. At 5.16 am on Monday, a passerby saw smoke billowing out from the shop located in a two-storey building and alerted the Fire department.

Chief Fire Officer Markandeya said a total of 15 fire tenders and 55 fire fighters took nearly three hours to douse the fire. The fire personnel broke open all the five rolling shutters in the shop and barged inside before the fire spread to other portions of the building.

Petrochemical content

Thinner and paints with petrochemical bases as content made it tough for them to extinguish the fire, said Ravi Shankar, the regional fire officer.

The Fire department sources said the shop owner had not put off the Deepawali lamp, which might have triggered the fire. However, Mansukh Lal Jain denied it.
