BANGALORE, November 3:  This Deepavali weekend brought untold misery to at least two Bangaloreans who sustained major eye injuries — one while bursting firecrackers and the other a hapless passerby.

In the case of 30-year-old medical representative B. Sathish, doctors have said he is unlikely to regain vision in his right eye. A resident of Magadi, he was travelling to Kengeri on his bike when a firecracker ruptured his right eyeball on Sunday morning.

His mother Soubhagya said: “A group of children were bursting firecrackers and the firecracker hit his eye and the passers-by rushed him to a private hospital,” said. His wife Asha Sathish said he had exercised caution and was even supervising his six-year-old daughter while she was bursting firecrackers on Saturday night. “He left home at 11 a.m. and within an hour we got a call that his eye was injured and he was on his way to a private hospital. We rushed there and then doctors advised us to get him shifted to Minto hospital.”

At the hospital, doctors performed a surgery on Sunday to remove foreign particles from his eye.

Meanwhile, doctors at the Minto Eye Hospital said his entire eyeball was ruptured and said “We are conducting a surgery but there is no chance of recovery of vision as it is a grievous injury.”

Another case

Another patient who suffered from a serious eye injury was seven-year-old Shashi M. Sharma, a resident of Mathikere, who was rushed to the West of Chord Road branch of Narayana Nethralaya. Sources in the hospital said Shashi was bursting firecrackers along with his friends and the firecracker which was lit by his friend apparently hit his left eye. Meanwhile, hospital sources said he had a tear in his left cornea and would be operated upon on Monday.
