BANGALORE: A man allegedly bludgeoned his daughter to death with a ceiling fan rotor, after his wife left for work on Tuesday morning. He later consumed poison and is battling for life in hospital.

Balaji, 38, was reportedly undergoing treatment at CMC Hospital, Vellore, in Tamil Nadu for a mental ailment. B Hemalatha, a student of Shyam School in GC Palya, was the only daughter of Balaji and Savitha, a housekeeping supervisor with an IT major. Savitha had left home around 6.30am. The family lived in Dwarakanagar, near Doddanelamangala, off Hosur Road.

“Everything was normal with my husband till I left home. I don’t know what transpired later,” Savita reportedly told Parappana Agrahara police.

Police found a bloodied ceiling fan rotor without blades near the girl’s body, inside the house.

“Balaji used it as a club to knock Hemalatha on her head. We learnt about the incident around 4pm after Savita returned home and found the girl in a pool of blood. By that time, Balaji had consumed some pesticide and was in an unconscious state,” said a police officer.

Balaji was rushed to Victoria Hospital. Doctors said his condition is critical and he might have consumed the pesticide metacid, considered a powerful poison.

“We’re keeping him under observation and there’s no guarantee he’ll survive. There was a long delay in admitting him to hospital after he consumed the pesticide,” a duty doctor told TOI.

Police said cases of murder and attempt to commit suicide have been registered against Balaji.

“What provoked him to kill the girl is not yet known. The child is dead and the assailant is battling for life. Until he regains consciousness, we can’t say anything as there are no witnesses until now,” police said.
