GLEOPARD

Mandya, October 19:  A leopardess, which had created panic among the residents of Kenchanahalli and surrounding villages in Pandavapura taluk, was trapped on Friday.

The sub-adult leopardess was later released into the forests at Hanur in Chamarajanagar district, sources in the Department of Forests told The Hindu.

The leopardess had killed and eaten some dogs, sheep and goats in Kenchanahalli and others villages in the last a few weeks, the sources said. Subsequently, department personnel placed a cage near a poultry farm at Kenchanahalli, and the leopardess walked in to the trap at about 4 a.m. on Friday. The wild cat was later tranquilised and transported to the forest.

A large number of people visited the spot to see the animal.

Meanwhile, forest officials said that as they had spotted three sets of pugmarks at the spot, they would place cages at different places to trap the other leopards.
