Residents join hands with NGOs to clean Alahalli lake

Bangalore, September 16: Residents of the localities around Alahalli lake engaged in spring cleaning the water body in J.P. Nagar 9th Phase on Sunday. Several citizens, including schoolchildren, gathered at the lake and volunteered in the effort to clean the lake.

The Alahalli Lake and Neighbourhood Development Trust had organised the drive which saw residents of Alahalli, Gollahalli, Anjanapura and other areas near the lake volunteering. The other volunteers were from the Youth for Seva organisation from Marathalli, staff from the Gurukul School and Government Urdu School.

The Citizen Action Forum president N.S. Mukunda spoke to the volunteers and shared ideas about interconnecting lakes and how it would help recharge underground water table. Urban planning expert Ashwin Mahesh also joined the volunteers.

A festive atmosphere prevailed at the lake with performances by artiste John Devaraj, students of the Born Free Art School and a dozen Japanese students. Through music and dance, they tried to spread the word about the importance of preserving lakes.

Weeds cleared
A release stated that the volunteers cleared the weeds for more than four hours and also removed garbage dumped into the lake besides cleaning the walking track around it.

The experience motivated many a volunteer and most of them vowed to meet every Sunday and actively participate in the lake rejuvenation activities, according to a release.
