State getting ready for legal fight: T.B. Jayachandra

JAYACHANDRATumkur, September 6:  Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister T.B. Jayachandra has said that the State government is making preparations to fight technically and legally the application filed by the Tamil Nadu government in the Supreme Court seeking to restrain Karnataka from starting new hydroelectricity projects.

Speaking to reporters after participating in a Teacher’s Day programme here on Thursday, Mr. Jayachandra said that the State government is committed to starting work on two hydroelectricity projects at Mekedatu and Shivanasamudram based on the judgment given by the Cauvery water disputes tribunal.

These two hydroelectricity projects can help the State generate more than 500 MW power, he said. He said that the Union government had issued notification and hence, the State government can start work.

He said that he will go to New Delhi to meet the Union Home, Agriculture and Law Ministers and make an appeal, on behalf of the Chief Minister, to them to intervene in the matter. He said that the Chief Minister was to meet the Ministers but he entrusted the work to him as he (Siddaramaiah) had pressing engagements.

Students demand

He said that students are staging agitations in veterinary colleges of Bidar, Hassan and Shimoga over these colleges not getting recognition from the Veterinary Council of India. He said that he will meet the authorities concerned and also the Union Minister and take up the issue with them.
