Gulbarga, Aug 17:The Central Universty of Karnataka has started two unique and innovative programmes from the current academic year. Integrated Science (dual degree) and Integrated Engineering (dual degree) have been introduced.

According to the CUK vice chancellor S S Murthy, the two new programmes are really innovative and are offered by no other institute in the country. The two courses offer integrated and comprehensive approach to science and engineering. One will have to study all branches of science and latter opt for specialisation. Similarly in engineering,  students will have to study all branches of engineering before opting for specialisation.

“Students of these courses will become experts in science and engineering,” Prof Murthy said.

To a query, Prof Murthy said there was no need to obtain permission of the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) for starting the Integrated Engineering programme as the CUK is an autonomous institution. Plans are on to start dual degree five-year programmes in integrated languages and humanities, schools of medicine, life sciences and education.

He said the CUK seeks chair professorships with support of stake holders. Hutti Gold Mines Ltd has evinced in interest to have a professorial chair in earth sciences and mining while the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board has offered to have one in environmental sciences, he added.
