bustedDavangere, Aug 12, 2013:The Davangere police on Monday busted a pangolin shell export racket by arresting one person. They recovered 25 kilograms of pangolin shells valued at Rs 40 lakh in the international market. The arrested has been identified as Dadapeer, a resident of Ranebennur taluk in Haveri district.

Addressing presspersons here, Inspector General of Police (Eastern Range) Dr S Parashiva Murthy said the police had information that there was a huge demand for pangolin shells in China and other countries. These shells are reportedly used in preparation of sedatives and other medicinal products as well as in manufacture of bullet proof jackets.

Those involved in the racket used to source Pangolin shells from traditional snake catchers from Shimoga and other places. They have been selling the shells to an agent in Chennai, who exported them to China and other countries. Investigations are on to ascertain the involvement of others, Dr Murthy said.
