Giri was hacked to death by a group of men near the Airavatha Hotel on Mysore Road on Saturday evening.
Chandru of K G Nagar, Madhusudhan of Kadirenahalli, Srikanth and Madan of Srinagar and Manja (alias Perra) of Byatarayanapura are the arrested.
Police investigations have revealed that all the five men were Giri’s friends and that their relations had soured recently. One cause of friction was Chandru’s formation of a new gang following a bitter argument with Giri.
The other four men, while pretending to be loyal to Giri, apparently maintained links with Chandru — irking Giri. Another point of contention was Giri’s teasing of Srikanth’s younger sister. When Srikanth objected, Giri allegedly threatened to throw acid on her face. Enraged, the gang had decided to join Chandru to eliminate Giri. Srikanth was arrested by Kengeri police, hours after the incident. The rest were arrested from Kyatasandra in Tumkur district in the wee hours of Sunday when they were trying to flee.
Two labourers injured
Two labourers sustained serious injuries and three others escaped with bruises when a section of an under-construction staircase collapsed at a construction site in BTM Layout on Sunday afternoon.
The two injured workers have been identified as Rehman, 26, and Maran, 31, both residents of Arasu Colony IX block.
Working at an under-construction three-story commercial complex near Advaita petrol pump at II Stage, BTM Layout, the men were engaged in building activity on the second floor of the building when the scaffolding that was provided for the new staircase gave way and collapsed over them.
The injured workers were rushed to a private hospital nearby where they are currently undergoing treatment. “Their condition is stable and are out of danger,” police said.
Mico Layout police have registered a case of negligence against the building owner, Rahim, and have detained him for questioning.
