Digvijay Singh is in charge of Congress affairs in Karnataka

DIGVIJAYBangalore, June 17;All India Congress Committee president Sonia Gandhi has reconstituted the Congress Working Committee and office-bearers of the organisation and appointed former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digvijay Singh as the general secretary in-charge of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Goa, replacing Madhusudan Mistry.

According to a press release, while retaining Shantaram Naik as secretary, the party has appointed A. Chella Kumar, R.C. Kuntia and Su. Thirunavukkarasar as secretaries for three States. V. Hanumantha Rao has been shifted.

While the former External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna and the former Union Minister and MLC M.V. Rajasekharan have been continued as special invitees to the Congress Working Committee (CWC), Oscar Fernandes, who was a general secretary, has been appointed as another special invitee to the CWC. He is likely to be inducted into the Manmohan Singh Ministry. The party has appointed another party leader from the State B.K. Hariprasad as general secretary in-charge of Odisha, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand.

According to sources, Mr. Digvijay Singh has been specially appointed to prepare the party’s State unit further to win the maximum seats in the Lok Sabha elections, especially in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president G. Parameshwara has welcomed the appointment of Mr. Digvijay Singh and hoped that he would ensure victory for the party in the parliamentary elections by strengthening it further.

Thanking Mr. Mistry, he said that the party had won the Assembly elections under his guidance.
