The menace of construction debris being dumped haphazardly on footpaths and roads continues unabated in the city. To put an end to this, the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is now contemplating a policy to effectively manage the disposal of construction debris.

A senior official said Commissioner Siddaiah met representatives of builders’ associations, contractors and civil society to discuss ways to effectively manage the problem.

It was at this meeting that a decision was taken to bring out a policy for effective disposal of construction debris.

The official said civil society members suggested allotting a designated area where construction debris from the city could be dumped.

The dumping could be monitored with GIS (geographic information system).

The policy will help the BBMP form guidelines to levy fines and take other forms of punitive action, if required, against those who indiscriminately dump construction debris on the roads and footpaths.

The meeting was attended by Biocon chief Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, solid waste management expert Almitra Patel and member of Solid Waste Management Round Table N.S. Ramakanth.
