India’s main space agency ISRO has been chosen for the prestigious Indira Gandhi prize for peace, disarmament. This is one of the biggest award that has come its way thus far and I am sure that even bigger prizes are awaiting it as it marches ahead.
Already the space agency seems to have become a leader as far as space exploration is concerned in whole of Asia. It must be kept in mind that both China and Japan, the two nations with well-funded space programs, have been unable to accomplish what Indian space agency accomplished in first go itself.
The Indira Gandhi prize for peace, disarmament comes following the success that ISRo achieved with successful entry of its Mars mission in the orbit of the Mars. This is one of the most prestigious awards given annually by India to individuals or organizations in recognition of creative efforts toward promoting international peace, development and a new international economic order; ensuring that scientific discoveries are used for the larger good of humanity, and enlarging the scope of freedom. The prize carries a cash award of 2.5 million Indian rupees and a citation. Many top world leaders are among its recipients

It is needless to say that scientific community is very excited with the announcement. India’s vice president Hamid Ansari who is the president of the jury that made the decision let the world know about the decision. “The Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development is awarded to the Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) in recognition of its path-breaking achievement, culminating in the Mars orbiter mission, its significant contribution in strengthening international cooperation in peaceful use of outer space”.
India’s space industry is not very old and has survived on wafer thin funding. It is needless to say that despite lack of big budget Indian space scientists have been able to made impossible possible by their sheer dedication, hard work and out of box thinking. The statement went on to add, “It has shown how true self-reliance is, often working in adverse circumstances when it was denied adequate access to the latest research and development elsewhere”. It is timely acceptance of ISRO’s achievements.
