MYSURU:  In an effort to draw the attention of authorities to the heavy weight of school bags, child rights activists and educationists joined hands with Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the City on Monday to weigh the school bags of children of private school.

Mr. Baburaj P., convenor of People’s Legal Forum, which organised the campaign against heavy school bags, said the average weight of the bags was found to be 30 per cent of the students’ weight. The activists checked the weight of the student and the bag on separate weighing scales.

“Medical experts have warned that students will suffer from physical complications in future if the weight of the bag is more than 10 per cent of their (students) weight,” he said.

The activists checked the weight of the school bags of children from UKG to class VIII belonging to Ideal Jawa Rotary School situated on Jhansi Lakshmi Bai Road.

The activists have now planned to conduct similar campaigns outside more schools in the City. “We will submit a memorandum to Mysore Lok Sabha MP Pratap Simha to bring pressure on the Centre to revive a Bill on weight of school bags, which is pending in the Parliament since 2006”, he said.
