BANGALORE: Union labour minister and senior Congress leader Mallikarjun M Kharge is clear he should get a post on merit and not because he is a dalit. “You can use the dalit card for social engagements like marriages or to contest elections, not for a chief minister’s post,” he told STOI.

Have you lost a lifetime opportunity of becoming the CM?

I can’t say that because in politics, anything can happen anytime. People will naturally compare me with others and say injustice has been done. The Congress has given me a lot.

Are you disappointed?

Why should I be, we leave every thing to the party high command.

But you were an aspirant for the chief minister’s post…

I wasn’t disappointed. Many posts have come my way when I wasn’t even an aspirant. I was made Congress Legislature Party leader and also KPCC president when I wasn’t expecting it. I wasn’t an aspirant for MP, but was asked to contest . I wasn’t an aspirant for a Union cabinet berth, but was inducted .

Was there a poll by MLAs for the CM’s post in which you lost?

I don’t know anything about that. I only participated in the meeting where a one-point resolution was adopted authorizing AICC president Sonia Gandhi to take a decision.

What do you think the government’s vision should be?

The new person should decide. The immediate priority is to strengthen the state’s finances and not give scope for corruption, and have a dispassionate and judicious view on matters. No investment has come into Karnataka all these years.

Shouldn’t this start with a cabinet of ministers with a clean image?

Everything depends on the CM. He knows what is good and bad and will be guided by the high command. Every person is conscious of his image.
