Tobacco farmers meet Harsh Vardhan

17BG_TOBACCO_2159639fMYSORE:  Tobacco farmers from Mysore region met Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan in the City on Friday and expressed their opposition to his proposal to discourage tobacco cultivation by promoting alternative crops.

About 50 tobacco farmers led by President of VFC Tobacco Growers’ Federation Javare Gowda met Dr. Vardhan at the All India Institute of Speech and Hearing (AIISH), where he had come to launching various facilities, and submitted a memorandum in the regard.Dr. Vardhan had recently written to Union Ministries of Agriculture and Commerce seeking an inter-ministerial meeting on October 29 to devise a scheme that encourages farmers to give tobacco cultivation.

Mr. Gowda told The Hindu that the Health Minister gave them a patient hearing and assured them that no hasty decision would be taken in the regard.
