An alert traffic police constable caught a man trying to flee on his motorcycle after snatching a chain from an elderly woman.

Traffic constable Anand (30), attached to the Jayanagar police station arrested Janardhan (45), a resident of Bannerghatta Road.

The incident occurred around noon on Friday when Anand was on his way to Madiwala police station from the office of the Assistant Commissioner of Police in South End circle on a bike to deliver documents. At Tilak Nagar junction, Janardhan, after snatching the chain from 62-year-old Divya Prabhu, was trying to flee when the victim raised an alarm.

Anand chased Janardhan and after pursuing him for nearly 2 km, he succeeded in knocking down Janardhan’s bike on a narrow stretch of road in Byrasandra. Initially, Janardhan feigned ignorance and stated that he was speeding since he had some emergency work to attend to. However, other motorists, who had followed Anand, searched him to find a gold chain weighing 120 g.

While Anand alerted the police control room, a group of policemen from the Tilak Nagar police station came to the spot and arrested the chain snatcher. A case has been registered in the Tilak Nagar police station. During questioning, the police said that Janardhan confessed to have done similar offences earlier.

Police Commissioner M.N. Reddi announced a reward of Rs. 25,000 to Anand and issued a certificate of appreciation.
