BANGALORE: The 2013 assembly polls have broken a 35 year record with the total poll percentage surpassing 71%. Of the total voting, males have registered 72.25%, while females 70.28%. Total percentage in 2008 assembly polls was 64.78%.

While Bangalore urban, which had not gone beyond 47%, registered an impressive 57.38% voting. Among the top cities in the country, Bangalore always registered less percentage. But this time the city has recorded exactly 57.38%. In 2008 assembly polls, Bangalore city had registered nearly 49.87%, in Lok Sabha polls held in 2009, it dipped to 44%.

Interestingly, Bangalore is one among three districts where females have voted more than males. The break-up includes males 67.21%, females 67.58%. Other two districts in this category are Bidar (male – 66.12%, female – 66.78%) and Udupi (male -75.44%, female – 76.08%).

Extensive campaign by Election Commisison, civil societies, individuals and media is said to be the reason for high percentage of polling in the state and Bangalore. “I am happy for the turnout in this poll. The percentage has significantly, particularly women have come in large numbers to vote. Our focus now is to further improve the percentage,” chief electoral officer Anil Kumar Jha said on Monday.

Following faulty electronic voting machine (EVM), the election authorities have ordered re-polling in booth 38 coming under Yashwanthpur assembly segment. Repolling will be held on Tuesday between 7am to 6pm in Herohalli primary school.
