Pepper robbers’ arrested : vehicles & weapons seized by police

Mangalore : Police have arrested seven accused on Wednesday, June 25 who had robbed pepper worth Rs. 8.5 lac from a godown located at Handelu in Puttige on June 21.

The interrogation also revealed that the accused had planned to loot the house of Kannada actress Radhika Kumaraswami situated in Salettur in Bantwal.

The police team guided by Ananth Padmanabh, Inspector general of police along with Ramesh Kumar, sub-inspector nabbed the accused along with one Mahindra Scorpio, Sumo Grand vehicle, 2 two large sized swords, four knives, iron rod, and iron bars.

The pepper godown located in Handelu is owned by Mukesh Kumar Patil of K.M.B Enterprise of Gujarat. 21 black pepper sacks weighing 60 k.g was stolen on Saturday, June 21. The incident came into light on Tuesday, June 24 when the workers entered the godown. The owner of the godown had expressed suspicion about the involvement of Harish from Kallamundkur, who used to work as a loader in this godown.

The police on Wednesday, June 25 intercepted a Mahindra Scorpio vehicle at Kayargundi of Moodbidri in which two gunny bags containing black pepper was being transported. The police nabbed the driver Sukesh Shetty (23), Naveen (30) from Valpady and Harish Poojary (32) from Kallamundkur, who were in the vehicle along with lethal weapons.

The questioning of the accused also helped the police in nabbing Yogi alias Yogiraj (23), a labourer from Nellikar, Yogeesh Salian (26), tile fixer, Mahesh (20), a labourer from Kotebagilu, and Pratap Rai (23), a conductor who had helped the accused in storing the stolen pepper bags at a vacant house in Hudco Colony.

The accused Harish Poojary, Naveen, and Yogiraj were working in one group. Sukesh Shetty, Mahesh, Naveen Kumar and Pratap Rai, the remaining accsued had fromed another group. The two groups together planned to rob the house of Radhika Kumaraswamy at Salethur near Bantwal. However, their plan of robbing Radhika’s house stands foiled.

They had also planned to steal pepper bags, after Harish Poojary, who had seen these pepper bags in the godown when he was hired by someone in the past, and executed their plan on June 21. The plan was discussed and executed during the regular meetings at the vacant house in Hudco Colony.

The accused Yogiraj was also involved in the murder case of Shekhar, a tailor from Hosmar. Sukesh and Naveen were also arrested before relating to minor cases of theft.

Meanwhile the police team led by Venkatesh Prasanna, deputy superintendent of police nabbed Ravi from Bajagoli, and Manjula from Mangalore, the two accused on Tuesday June 24 who were involved with drawing a plan to rob Actress Radhika Kumaraswamy’s house.

Dr Sharanappa, District superintendent of police, has guided the investigation.
