UDUPI: The Udupi district and sessions court has sentenced a 41-year-old man to three years of imprisonment for duping a girl by making false marriage promise.

The accused Raghurama, 41, a resident of Shankarapura in Udupi taluk on March 8, 2009, promised a lift to the complainant who was waiting near a bus stand to go to Shankarapura. He took her in his car to a place in Karkala and made her drink a sedative laced beverage which made her unconscious.

The accused later raped her. When the complainant woke up and protested the act, Raghurama promised to marry her. The accused also threatened to kill her if she revealed the incident to her guardians.

He also took advantage of her helplessness and continued sexual relation with her. When the complainant became pregnant, he refused to marry her saying that his sister is yet to be married. He also succeeded in persuading her to abort her pregnancy.

As the complainant went to his house to seek justice about three months ago, Raghurama’s father Aithappa and others at home attempted to kill her.

SV Girish, then circle inspector investigated the case. Public prosecutor T S Jithuri argued in favour of the prosecution.
