Mangalore, Mar 8: Christian delegation urged DC AB Ibrahim to ensure Christian community to observe Maundy Thursday, which will fall on April 17, the day scheduled for Lok Sabha elections in the state.
The delegation including Fr William Menezes, Fr J B Crasta and MP Noronha, Convener of Mangalore Diocese Political Awareness Committee, met DC on March 7, Friday, on behalf of the Bishop of Mangalore.
The delegation stated that Maundy Thursday is a sacred to the Christian community which attends church mass after 3 pm on that day.
The memorandum stated that most of the polling centres in DK are in the schools which are close by the churches; hence the community who are attending the mass or service of worship in the church should not be put to inconvenience and need suitable arrangements by the election commission to avoid inconvenience for the church goers.
They also request DC not to depute Christian teachers or government employees on election duty so that they miss the service of worship held in observance of Maundy Thursday is an integral part of Christian Faith.
A copy of the memorandum was also been forwarded to the Chief Election Commissioner.
