Mangalore, Feb 27: Bishop Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza released a voluminous trilingual English – Kannada – Konkani dictionary, containing approximately 50,000 words a special ceremony at Kalaangann, Shaktinagar on February 26, Wednesday.
Stephen Quadras Permude and Fr Basil Vaz compiled the dictionary and published by Pathadarshini Seva Trust.
Renowned litterateurs Dr Na D’Souza unveiled English – Konkani dictionary, Sara Abubakker unveiled Kannada – Konkani dictionary and linguist Dr K V Narayana unveiled English -Kannada – Konkani dictionary and later Bishop released it officially.
Speaking on the occasion, Bishop said that English – Konkani dictionary was released in 2007 which benefitted a lot to people and this three-language dictionary will serve a greater purpose, since it is used in everyday lives and helps in learning a new language.
Dr Na D’Souza said that for the first time a Konkani dictionary has been compiled with 50,000 words, earlier the maximum was 30,000 words. The English – Kannada – Konkani dictionary is a new concept and lot of hard work and efforts have gone into it.
Speaking as a chief guest, Dr. KV Narayana, eminent linguist said that learning of one or more languages will contribute to intellectual development.
Stephen Quadras and Fr Basil Vaz were felicitated on the occasion.
